There are a few key things we tend to look for in summer clothes. One, be lightweight enough to wear on even the hottest of days. Two, can be thrown over a pair of swimmers at a moment’s notice. And three, be a little fun. It’s at the intersection of these three aspects that resort wear comes in. As the name suggests, it’s designed to be worn on holidays, so it’s a little less fussy and a little more fun than your regular wardrobe staples. They’re the kind of pieces made for throwing on and going to the beach, or the bar, or both, and they inspire a sense of wanderlust via vibrant hues and playful prints.

Whether you’re heading out of the city or will be firmly planted in Sydney this summer, never underestimate the power of breezy, dopamine-inducing resort wear to transport you to the pebbly shores of Santorini. Here, we round up the new season resort wear staples we plan on living in.

Few brands are as dedicated to the funky resort wear vibe as Tommy Bahama. While we’re tempted by the palm-printed pants and button-downs, we can’t go past this feminine and easy silk shift dress printed with orchids.

A bold printed set is a resort wear staple, and we’re drawn to the Italian vibe of Aje’s silk version. The pants make a versatile staple worn with their matching shirt or solo with a white tank or T-shirt, or with a halterneck and wedges come dinner time.

The fluidity of silk and satin makes it the perfect fabric for resort wear. Case in point? Acler’s Yewdale maxi skirt, which, in a delicious forest green hue, is an ultra chic and ever-so-slightly whimsical look for balmy nights.

Flip flops are so back, and Christopher Esber’s bejewelled take elevates the classic rubber version. Wear these with a floor-grazing skirt or breezy pants for a pop of Y2K-inspired sparkle as you walk.

Made for hot days when you still need to look chic, P.Johnson Femme’s elegant organza top lends old-world sophistication to a summer ensemble. Pair it with the matching skirt for a dreamy island-inspired look.
